Tips for How to Save Money on Travel 1. Plan Ahead: The key to budget travel is planning. Research your destination, find the best deals on flights and accommodations, and create a budget for your trip. By planning ahead, you can take advantage of early bird discounts and avoid last-minute expenses.
We travel full-time with our two dogs and AirBNB's can be far scarcer for us to find. We plan months ahead and often save 40% or more on our stays. 2. Travel Off-Season: Avoiding peak travel seasons can save you a significant amount of money. Prices for flights, accommodations, and attractions tend to be lower during off-peak times. Plus, you'll have the added benefit of fewer crowds and a more authentic experience. If you are like me, I appreciate a cool summer so traveling in Sicily during the winter is a perfect option for me! 3. Be Flexible with Dates: If you have the flexibility to travel on weekdays or during non-holiday periods, you can often find better deals. Airlines and hotels often offer discounted rates for midweek travel, so be open to adjusting your travel dates. 4. Stay in Budget Accommodations: Consider staying in budget accommodations such as hostels, guesthouses, or vacation rentals. These options are often cheaper than hotels and can provide a more immersive experience. Plus, you'll have the opportunity to meet fellow travelers and share tips and stories. We stayed in a fantastic hostel in Cotopaxi, Ecuador and it was such a unique experience. We had the opportunity to meet fellow travelers and forge new friendships. 5. Cook Your Own Meals: Eating out can quickly add up, especially in popular tourist destinations. Save money by cooking your own meals or opting for street food. Not only will you save money, but you'll also get to experience the local cuisine in a more authentic way. Some of the best meals we have made at home have been by sourcing local ingredients and experimenting with the local spices. Don't be afraid to try something new! This is the perfect tip on how to save money on travel. In our travels, we have saved thousands cooking our own meals. 6. Use Public Transportation: Instead of relying on taxis or private transfers, use public transportation to get around. Trains, buses, and subways are often cheaper and can give you a more local experience. Plus, you'll have the chance to interact with locals and discover hidden gems. 7. Take Advantage of Free Activities: Many cities offer free or low-cost activities and attractions. Research ahead of time to find museums with free admission days, walking tours, or local festivals. These experiences can be just as enriching as paid attractions and won't break the bank. While in Sicily this winter, we discovered in the city of Siracusa, the first Sunday of each month, has free admission to all museums, places of culture and archaeological parks. 8. Travel Light: Avoid checked baggage fees by packing light and only bringing the essentials. Not only will you save money, but you'll also have the freedom to move around more easily. Plus, you'll avoid the stress of lugging around heavy suitcases. 9. Use Travel Apps and Websites: Take advantage of travel apps and websites to find the best deals on flights, accommodations, and activities. Sites like Skyscanner, https://skyscanner.pxf.io/c/3502638/1027991/13416 AirBNB and Booking can help you save money and find hidden gems. 10. Embrace Slow Travel: Instead of rushing from one destination to another, embrace slow travel. Stay in one place for a longer period, allowing you to immerse yourself in the local culture and save money on transportation costs. You'll have the chance to truly experience a destination and create lasting memories. We recommend at least one month in a location if possible. There are often substantial discounts available for one month stays. Budget travel doesn't mean sacrificing quality or missing out on amazing experiences. By following these tips, you can make the most of your travel adventures while staying within your budget. So, pack your bags, grab your passport, and get ready for an incredible journey without breaking the bank!

We are Warren and Julie; we are early retirement travelers with a wanderlust for seeing the world. As of 2024, Warren has visited 46 countries, and Julie 45, our dogs Katie and Arya have been to 26 countries. We transitioned to a permanent life of slow travel retirement in March of 2020. The goal is to spend quality time in the countries we travel to spending a month or more at a location, while also taking side trips and adventures along the way. We really want to feel the culture, know the people, and examine the cost of living, while also doing the typical tourist attractions. We are traveling with our two dogs, which adds a layer of complications at times. You are invited to join our slow travel roving early retirement journey. We absolutely love this fantastic soft carrier dog backpack. It has now been used on three continents and is still in great condition. I highly recommend this for small dogs. It was very comfortable for our dog on our transatlantic flight as well. High quality construction and great back support!
